So it's 2:36am on February 6th, 2009, and here I am halfway laying on my couch with my back against the armrest and my laptop on my lap. I poke around on Google, looking up odds and ends stuff. Strange thing to do at 2:36am right? Haha, tell me you haven't done it. Nonetheless, there was nothing I could be doing with my time that would have suited better. Nothing creative to do, nothing resourceful to be doing, nothing... constructive. Suddenly my attention is abruptly grabbed by a number. A date. December 21st, 2012. It stuck out like a sore thumb that had been whacked with a hammer. Me being an enthusiast about numerology, I quickly added the date in my head. Eleven. My brain starts to turn. Eleven? Those of you who don't study or believe in numerology, eleven is "The Master Number". I'm intrigued.
I continue along this little quest to find the meaning of the date 12.21.2012, an interesting date I might add. What was the meaning behind it? Ahh, here we are... the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar. The ever so talked about "Doomsday". The end of humanity. We aren't talking about the end of the world itself, we're talking about extinction. I dig deeper. From website to website I jump, reading theories and thoughts of scholars, scientists and average people. All the while, my brain is beginning to pick up pace.
The most common theory I find? That on December 21st, 2012, the polarity of Earth's magnetic fields will abruptly switch (switching of the poles), causing a global catastrophe, ending the lives of more than 2/3rds of the Earth's population. We're talking over 4 billion people. That's a little more than a handful. Governments would fall, technology would have the hands of time turned back by decades if not centuries, and society would be in shambles. Hmm, cold rush up the back followed by goosebumps. I'm not liking what I'm reading... but still, I move forward.
My quest goes on. I dig deeper and deeper. What else is related to this date? December 12th, 2012? Winter Solstice. Oh, now that's interesting. For those of you that don't know, (A solstice is an astronomical event that happens twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most oriented toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun to reach its northernmost or southernmost extreme. ~ Courtesy of Wikipedia). I'm still not satisfied. More research reveals that on that day, the Sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way, an occurence that only happens every 25,800 years (according to scientists). How they know this, I don't know. My thirst for more knowledge grows... I'm too deep to go back, I keep going.
With some research of the Solstic calendars, I find that on December 21st, 2012, Winter Solstice is scheduled to occur at 11:11am. NOW we are getting somewhere. If you recall back to the beginning of this blog, I added the date 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 11, correct? Right. Date, 11. Time, 11:11. See where I'm going with this? Rememeber when I said that in numerology 11 is "The Master Number"? Yes, interesting. Here's where it gets even more interesting. The Mayans believed in systems and principles based on forms of numerology. Hey, we're on a roll now. All aboard the info train!
Now, I did say that eleven is "The Master Number", however... it is also considered "The Life Path" number. Were the Mayans aware of an endless spiral based on numbers? When it comes to astronomy, the Mayans were pros. Not just average Joes (no offense to any Joes that may be reading this). The Mayans were also good at math. Were they able to calculate that the Winter Solstice would occur at 11:11 on December 21st, 2012 (a "Life Path" day)? Would this cause the Mayans to believe that the multiple occurences of "The Master Number" was a sign indicating the end of time? Did the Mayans believe in synchronicity (Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events which are casually unrelated occurring together in a supposedly meaningful manner. In order to count as synchronicity, the events should be unlikely to occur together by chance. ~ Courtesy of Wikipedia again)? Or were the Mayans in tune with a whole different side of the story that we have yet to see? Is there some significance related to the Sun's gravitational pull and it being aligned with the center of the Milky Way, as well as the Earth's gravitational pull? I guess time can only tell. For now, I sit with a theory based on the number 11. Believe what you want, but if the Mayans are right and humanity faces catastrophe on December 12th, 2012... believe that I will be having one heck of a party starting the night before, and ending at 11:11am on December 21st, 2012.
